Mercia Report 07-09-07
2nd Round of the West Midlands Cyclo-cross League
The Mercia H.B.M promoted the second round of the West Midlands Cyclo-cross League with an entry of 206 riders. A good days racing was held at the National Forestry Centre at Rosliston, organised by Keith Lee of the Mercia H.B.M. Due to the dry conditions all the forestry tracks were rideable, which meant some fast and competitive racing for all ages from Eight To Eighty years old.
The first race was the under 12s with 53 entries. Mercia’s Joshua Waters who finished 16th overall (4th in the under 10s) and his brother Bailey was 28th overall (and 4th in the under 8s). Mathew Wells (Plan B Racing) was 25th overall and 8th in the under 10s. The overall winner was Alex Watton (Halesowen A & C.C).
The racing continued with under 15s, Juniors, Ladies, and Veterans race with 97 entries, won by Veteran Mark Garrett (Coventry R.C). Tom Lowe, a member of Derby’s Merlin R.T was 4th and second Junior.
The final race was the Seniors with 37 entries. It was an exciting finish with David Clarke beaten into second place in the sprint finish won by under-23 rider Peter Banham (Wyre Forest C.R.C). Ray Yeomans (Plan B Racing) finished 31st.
Hill Climbs
After driving down from Otley in Yorkshire, where he won the Yorkshire Road Clubs Hill climb on Weardley Bank in the morning, David Clarke only arrived at the Cyclo-cross event 20 minutes before the start. The previous day he won the Obri Coaching Racing Team hill climb held on the “Cliff” in Hollins Lane, Oakenshaw, West Yorkshire.
Time-trials
Gary Brown competed in the Andover Wheelers weekend of racing. In the 10 mile time-trial he timed 22:14 (his fastest time at the distance this year). The winning time of 19:02 was done by David McGraw (Oxford University C.C). In the following days 25 mile time-trial he timed 1:00:05. The winner was Danny Axford (Artic Shorter Rochford R.T) in 52:29.
