Les Lowe celebrates his birthday by riding the Plan B Reliability Trial.
Les Lowe celebrated his 76th birthday by being one of the 86 riders (on his tri-cycle) in the Plan B Racing Club’s Reliability Trial starting & finishing at the National Forestry Centre at Rosliston. Les chose the one lap 50 km distance which he completed in just over 3 hours, his total distance for the day was 76 km to coincide with his birthday, which included him riding to the event from his home in Stretton plus some extra kilometres riding home.
Other Mercia HBM members also riding the reliability trial were Roger Owen who did 2 laps to complete 100km in under 4 hours. Keith Staley, Simon Parker, Mark Eccleston, Jeff. Lea, Nick Marriott & Ivor James completed the 50 km within 2 hours. Peter Rose finished in 2 hours & 45 minutes. The route the riders followed from the Forestry Centre was via Drakelow, Catton Park & Whitemoor to Whittington. Then over the Main West Coast railway line at Fisherwick, to continue through Elford Harlaston & Haunton, to Clifton Campville. From Clifton Campville the riders climbed up to No Man’s Heath to turn left on the B5493, then left again to pass through Chilcote, Netherseal & Grangewood. Then back to Rosliston via Botany Bay.
The previous weekend the Sutton Coldfield Club C.C. Giro also held a Reliability Trial starting & finishing at the Forestry Centre on a similar shortened course of 33 km that went from Catton Park to Edingale then onto Harlaston missing out Whittington & Elford. Roger Owen completed 3 laps. Jeff Lea, Simon Parker & Mark Eccleston 2 laps. Ivor James & Nick Marriott 1 lap. All the Mercia riders were within the time limits.
In his first event of 2007 Matt Simons finished 25th out of 69 riders in Coalville Wheelers Hilly 25 mile Time-trial on the Griffydam circuit, in a time of 1 hou 4 minutes 30 seconds. The winner was Andy Proffitt (Arctic Shorter Rochford R.T.) in 58 minutes 40 seconds.
